Seat

Faurecia has also increased safety for Jeep Cherokee passengers by delivering seat structures that include highly resistant reclining mechanisms used to obtain the most comfortable back-rest position. The sturdiness of the structures developed by Faurecia means back rests in the rear seats no longer need to be attached to the car body. Seat frames are adjustable and are based on a platform shared by five other vehicles, which represents significant production volume for Faurecia in North America. All seats slide on high resistance tracks, also provided by Faurecia.

Door

For the vehicle’s interior, Faurecia provides High Integrated Modules (HIM) for both front and rear doors. The HIM door module is a concept based on function integration, and was designed and patented by Faurecia. Since 2001, Faurecia has paved the way in the development of the manufacturing process for this product. The groundbreaking use of plastics in the third-generation door modules (HIM3) received an award for automotive innovation from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) in the United States. This product was first released for the Dodge Nitro, which shares the same component platform.

In short, the HIM door module comprises a structural section in injected plastic that fits the inside of the door and on which the different mechanical door functions are incorporated. These built-in features include waterproofing, the window lifter system, internal and external door latch parts, speakers, wiring harnesses and electronic components.

In contrast to conventional doors, modules with such extensive integrated features provide significant benefits in terms of cost, weight and ease of assembly. They also improve soundproofing and greatly reduce the number of parts to be mounted.

The door modules are produced at the state-of-the-art plastic injection plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, before delivery to the automaker’s Toledo plant in Ohio.

Exhaust

Along with the door modules and seat structures, Faurecia has developed and produces all components for the exhaust system on the Cherokee, including the front and middle pipe sections, the catalytic converters, the particulate filters for diesel engines and the mufflers. The exhaust system is one of the most complex features on this vehicle, requiring all Faurecia’s expertise in design and production. The role of the muffler, for example, is to reduce noise from the exhaust pipe. The catalytic converter uses a chemical process to transform toxic gases into clean, inert products. And finally, the particulate filter for diesel engines eliminates more than 99% of particulates from fuel burnt by the engine. All of these products are designed to function perfectly without affecting engine performance.

This is the first time that Faurecia has produced a particulate filter for the United States. Developing the system meant coordinating the transfer of skills from the European team to their North American counterparts.
