A 25% to 30% weight saving
Faurecia, a global expert in front ends, is working on modules that combine an aluminum honeycomb structure with foam or plastic energy absorbers. The weight saved is 25% to 30% compared to all-metal solutions. Another benefit is the extra space gained by reducing the vehicle's front overhang.
Faurecia's modular approach helps drive the weight reduction approach. For instance, the front end of the Audi A5 Sportback incorporates several functions, including the cooling, shock absorption and lighting systems on a composite metal-plastic carrier. This greatly improves multi-functional integration while reducing the vehicle's weight and enhancing rigidity. Another light advantage is the aluminum insert.
The Light Attitude innovation can also create superior acoustic comfort. Faurecia's R&D engineers have developed a new three-layer insulator fitted between the engine and the body, using foam on either side of a thin airtight center layer. The weight saved in comparison to the old two-layer acoustic insulator is 25% to 30%.
