Acoustic package : a key challenge
Acoustic protection is now recognized as a major
contributor to vehicle comfort and is no longer limited
to the mere soundproofing of the floor or engine.
It is one of the priorities in the organization and fitting
of vehicles' interior systems.

Tailor-made acoustic solutions
As a European acoustics specialist, Faurecia offers its
customers global expertise, ranging from the vehicle's
acoustic engineering to the provision of textiles and
materials.
Its wide range of floor coverings, carpets and insulators
can meet all the vehicle's soundproofing needs.
The Group is also developing a modular approach
for the engine compartment, the interior and the trunk
by designing multifunctional systems. Our range of
solutions is constantly expanding to offer the greatest
possible choice of materials and options to the vehicle
designer.

Unique research and simulation expertise
To design better and more complete acoustic systems, the Group relies
on its research centers in Mouzon, France and Sassenburg, Germany, where
200 researchers design, develop and test solutions with the same goal
as their customers: keeping time to market and cost to a minimum. This
is why Faurecia has invested in some of the most powerful analysis and
simulation tools in the world. The experts have coupled reverberation
rooms, in which sound levels are constant throughout the space with semi-anechoic
chambers and echoless four-wheel drive roller test beds to reproduce the
conditions of a country road.
They have access to calculation and simulation software
that ranks amongst the world's most advanced. The
superiority of Faurecia's innovation was underlined by
the finalization of the "acoustic synthesis method" in
2003. Using measurements and calculations, this tool
reproduces the sound of a vehicle interior with unrivalled
precision —1dBa between 500 and 5,000 Hz— and can
therefore optimize the acoustic package in terms of
insulation and absorption. This method dispenses with
the automakers' need to produce real prototypes to
evaluate their vehicles' acoustic performance. The
pinpointing of the areas to be soundproofed allows
those areas to be optimized and the cost of the
package to be reduced.

Real acoustic comfort
The improvement of materials and functions is a major field of innovation.
The aim is to boost acoustic performance, reduce weight and increase recyclability.
Faurecia has been able to capitalize on the many properties of Sommold,
a recyclable material in a textile/glass fiber/polypropylene composite
for the development of new applications. This research led to the invention
of Somfloor, a double-walled floor that weighs and costs less than
traditional solutions.
