Exhaust systems : drawing on innovation to safeguard the environment

The demand for differentiation has led automakers to search for new engine configurations that must be constantly adapted to increasingly exacting world standards for pollution reduction. Faurecia is supporting this development worldwide by offering a wide range of exhaust systems and new-generation particulate filters.

Present on three continents, Faurecia produces most components of the exhaust system and delivers to almost all the major global automakers. The Group is well-known for its global approach to exhausts, which takes into account the system's immediate environment — the vehicle's architecture, engine and engine controls — as well as the interactions between the different parts of the system itself. Its expertise is brought to bear on the entire exhaust system, as well as on all the constituent parts.

Significant progress in environmental protection

Six percent of the Product Group's sales are devoted to the search for innovative solutions, with the ambition to improve component performance in terms of acoustics, pollution reduction and cost. Last year, Faurecia innovated in its use of materials and existing technologies and invented new procedures lending essential support to the advance of motorization.
A new generation of manifolds, significantly lighter and offering optimal performance. By incorporating a catalytic converter, Faurecia has further refined the technology of the mechanically welded manifold to improve engine performance and reduce the start time of the catalytic converter.
Refinement of the canning process : this technology for the casing of ceramic substrates was developed for fragile, thin-walled substrates at 900/2. They require less precious metal and therefore reduce the cost of catalytic converters.
Launch of a new particulate filter : in 2003, Faurecia was the first to market and the first to launch series production of the diesel particulate filter for the Mercedes C and E Classes.
Improvement of acoustic comfort : with the application of new procedures to reduce vibration and limit muffler weight, as well as fixing and decoupling components.

Putting pollution control first

Faurecia's approach is to address pollution reduction at the design stage. New regulations limiting the emission of CO2 and other pollutants have confirmed the wisdom of this policy. The expansion and reorganization of the research teams devoted to this issue have led to the development of new technical solutions reducing weight and enhancing "recyclability".
