Safe, effective front-end modules
The front-end module is a complex structure. It is a key
element in the vehicle’s look, aerodynamic
performance and safety, and must meet automakers’ growing
demand for modularity.
Faurecia’s front-end module is based on a composite
front-end carrier. This structural element allows functions
to be optimally integrated, with reduced weight, while the
module itself can be fitted to the vehicle in accordance
with the most stringent requirements. Similarly, Faurecia
designs and produces components that can be
incorporated into the module or delivered separately,
such as bumper systems and cooling fan systems. Its
skill in making these components enhances the module
offer, especially in aeraulic performance, fit and finish, and
the protection of the vehicle and of pedestrians. In
addition to the advantages of module design, Faurecia’s
approach enables automakers to reduce their own
production costs. Delivered just-in-time and
pre-assembled, modules require shorter assembly times
and simplify supply-chain management.
From design to just-in-time delivery
Faurecia is committed to maintaining flawless continuity
from project to production, and supports the design of
front-end components and modules with sophisticated
calculation, simulation and testing tools. These help to
provide automakers with optimal solutions in terms of
vehicle structure, functional integration, perceived
quality, fit and finish, cooling and assembly.
Three R&D priorities
Safety: From the very first stages of the design of the
module, bumper, or front-end carrier, pedestrian safety
issues and energy absorption are integrated into the
process. The technical teams draw on internal
innovations that conform to the most demanding
regulations and use powerful simulation tools to test
their solutions.
Performance: One of Faurecia’s major concerns is the
continuous improvement of front-end components. The
Group possesses unique expertise in the development
of thermoplastics and metal-plastic hybrids, suitable for
the creation of front-end carriers and bumpers, and
which offer good weight-cost-rigidity-aspect ratios. The
cooling fan systems are being studied with a view to
reducing engine bulk and sound levels, and improving
aeraulic performance. The module’s architecture,
including electronics, is based on the maximal
integration of structural functions, cooling and lighting.
Perceived quality: The aspect and perceived quality of the front end are essential criteria for automakers.
Faurecia works closely with them on the development
of optimal technical and industrial solutions. Front ends
delivered by Faurecia measure up to the strictest
requirements in terms of fit and finish between the
bumper, headlights, hood and fenders.
