 Reducing
car pollution means both improving engine combustion and making lighter
vehicles. Faurecia is a pioneer and world leader in the diesel
particulate filter market, and has launched a new generation of manifolds,
including one for turbo
engines. To meet the automakers' target of a 10% weight reduction with every
vehicle replacement, the Group is developing solutions using lighter materials,
such as aluminum, plastic composites and magnesium. For
the interior trim, in which sound insulation accounts for 50 to 60% of
the weight, Faurecia has developed the Lightweight
concept, which reconciles the end-user's demand for acoustic
comfort with the need to cut down on fuel consumption by reducing
weight. Acoustic pollution is also a focus of attention: solutions for
noise reduction include new materials specially developed for engine
absorbers, and the ALES
lightweight muffler concept.
Faurecia applies pollution control early on
in the vehicle design process. Recyclable materials, such as metals, polyurethane
and cloth, are used as standard, and components are designed for easy
separability. New polyurethane formulations with reduced VOCs (volatile
organic compounds) are used in the production process and, once on the
road, they help to lower emissions into the vehicle's interior.
Ecofriendly products and processes
Faurecia promotes environmental protection
throughout the product lifecycle, from design to end-of-life. Particular
attention is paid to the European directive on end-of-life vehicles, which
eliminates heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, from production, and
requires increasing vehicle recyclability. Faurecia has adopted these requirements
in its development processes, and works in partnership with suppliers in
order to satisfy its customers in terms of product composition.
Designing products that are increasingly ecofriendly
means that the manufacturing process helps to preserve natural resources
and protect the environment. In order to optimize its organization, Faurecia
is gradually introducing environmental management systems based on the
ISO 14001 standard.
